Tri-Sure has developed a plastic screw cap free of carbon black for use with Greif jerrycans in response to the ongoing black plastic recycling challenge.
Undetectable by recycling facilities using near-infrared (NIR) technology, conventional black plastics containing carbon black colorants are challenging to recycle and often end up in landfills. The new packaging material uses an alternative black color that does not contain carbon.
The carbon black free closure will initially launch in Scandinavia, where changes in legislation within the Nordic Swan Ecolabel state that packaging and closures must not include carbon black in the coloring process.
“The new caps will be more easily sorted for recycling, and in time we hope that they become the standard across the rest of Europe and even worldwide,” said Jacob Demén, Sales Director - Scandinavia. “It is a small step change but will have a significant impact and underlines our commitment to producing innovative, safe, and high-performing products that have a low environmental impact. Innovations such as these support our resolve to embrace a low-carbon future and minimize raw material use by innovating new products and solutions that support a circular economy.”
The carbon black free screw cap attaches to all Greif jerrycans used across various industries, including food and beverage, chemicals, and agrochemicals. Tri-Sure is a global leader in industrial closures and packaging components.
